I opened a Q&A on my instagram story. @amy_m_jay
The Questions
“Do you own the land you are on, or is a lease of some kind ? How much land ?”
I own it. It’s 52 acres surrounded by crown land. It was logged around 15 years ago, so most of the trees are a nice manageable size. There isn’t a flat spot on it, and there’s lots of wildlife.
'“Have you started feeding my 🦌 for the fall yet? 😂”
Lol! Noooo….. but if the deer happen to find the apples that I drop on my way to the goat pen… 🤷🏼♀️ *my deer, mine.*
“What made you choose that lifestyle?”
I have a goal of learning to be more self reliant and self sustainable. I like understanding how things work. Also, I love having my own space. I grew up on a hobby farm in Ontario and it never really left me. Horses, Cows, Dirt-biking. In my 20’s I lived in a condo, went to the gym, fake tanned, drove a sports car. It was fun, but it wasn’t me. What I’m doing now is less than normal for most. It’s messy and dirty most of the time. Has it rough moments for sure, but it makes my heart warm.
“When or how or what made you feel true confidence inside?”
I love this question.
Well. I rarely have a damn clue what I’m doing. So, I can confidently go ahead knowing that I have no idea what I’m doing. It’s probably going to turn out differently than I expected. It’ll be a mess before I figure it out.
I’ve made some pretty big leaps in life so far. They’ve served me well. They don’t always turn out. But I learn from them. There’s always a positive, even in your f*ck-ups. I guess you can say my confidence comes from knowing that I’m going to mess up - and it’ll be great.
“Favourite Book?”
Hm. I don’t know that I have one. I’m currently listening to “The Chrysalids” on audible. It was one that we had to read in school. I don’t remember much of it and wanted to re-read it. Something about the post-nuclear future setting felt fitting given how turbulent the world is currently.
“Where did you get your love for the outdoors?”
I grew up on a small farm in Ontario. My parents are divorced but both separately have a real love for nature. My dad would stop the car for a turtle, or a snake. My mum housed orphaned raccoons until they could live in the wild.
I had a teacher for grades 2 and 4 that was a real nature nut and taught us as much about the natural world as he could. I have this awesome memory of our class sitting under a weeping willow tree in the field listening to him read “The Neverending Story”. To me the little lives around us are what make the world more fun. The way that an ecosystem works to support life including our own. That’s some pretty cool stuff in my opinion.
“Do you have power at your place?”
Nope, and doubt that I ever will. The closest power lines are miles away. I have a small solar system that does pretty much everything for me. For the higher wattage things I’ll fire up the generator.
“How deep in the woods are you?”
Actually not as far as you’d think. When the wind is going the right way I can hear the highway. What makes my place more challenging is the altitude. I’m nearly 3000 feet above the nearest town.
“When can I come visit?’
No visitor please! I live in the woods far from other people for a reason.
The Other questions
“Single? Lol also do you hunt?”
Not Single. Yes I hunt but I’m not particularly good at it. I’m hoping for a bear this spring.
“Why”
Why Not?
