Something about the way squirrels and chipmunks cruise through life, just makes me laugh. Living life in the moment. They almost never fail to put a smile on my face. Almost. But I suspect that the feeling is not mutual. Like the movie, ‘Mouse Hunt’ with Christopher Walken, they’re out to get me. Leaving little boobytraps around the yard, trying to take me out.
I’m under attack from all sides. Mice have been going into the shower, eating my bar of soap and leaving their droppings - like a hantavirus-packed calling card. The Voles have been digging ankle-twisting traps around my house. There’s a squirrel that chews hoses and wires, likely trying to start a fire while I sleep. Reluctantly, it’s time to tune them in.
Enter - the kitten.
Our feline friends are deceptive. Behind that cute fuzzy exterior is a natural-born killer. Because of this, in the city, I’m not the biggest fan of cats. I hated watching the neighbour’s kitty bring home birds. Picking off a flock of ‘bush tits’ that frequented my bird feeder, one by one. All claws and teeth, hunting their prey without remorse. Playing with them before giving them a death bite. Savage.
But my hand was forced. If the mice want to play dirty, I’ll play dirty. Traps haven’t worked. Voles don’t go into them, chipmunks and squirrels are too fast - dodging as it snaps. I don’t want to introduce poisons to the ecosystem, so hiring a tiny fluffy hitman was my only choice.
Life’s funny in that way, we hadn’t realized that we had a problem until a solution showed itself. Our good friends needed to find homes for their kittens ASAP. One of those little kitties was all black with bright blue-green eyes. The eyes will likely turn yellow with time, we’ll see. She’s the perfect colour choice to dodge the coyotes.
Just like that, we’d put a bounty on those little tyrants’ heads. Now to wait for her to grow. She’s small, but she’s feisty and I think that she’ll be an excellent hunter! Now, what to call her… After a week of getting to know the little terror, Curt thought of the best possible name. Based on a cartoon that we watch we decided to call her ‘Luci’ short for Lucifer. The little demon kitty.
You will come to admire and love Luci. Cats are smart. They are one of the few "domesticated" animals that have retained their hunting and survival skills. They're quite well evolved in terms of self-sustainability, just like you, new kitty mama !!!
I love her name. She looks adorable. Hopefully she becomes a great hunter to end your troubles.
