Your quite the planner and knowing you, it will all work out exactly as planned.
I wish I was younger as I have already designed a cabin, in my head. Just need to put it down on paper. Have any extra room on the property? It would be a miners cabin. Not to big!
Did you store your water in the IBC totes last year? I got a couple of IBC totes and wasn't sure if I should store the water over the winter or not because I didn't know if the entire tote would freeze or not. Did your IBC tote freeze solid? How cold was it?
WOW! I'm in upstate New York and wouldn't be surprised to have a few days at -20c. I'm glad I chose to drain my IBC tote. I even thought of leaving it 2/3 full to leave room for expansion, but just figured I would drain it.
Hopefully, you have better luck this year. Looks like you're going to enclose the area where the totes are. That should be a big help.
Thanks! In truth I'm getting ahead of myself with the animals and canning too, but I love it.
What's your main motivation for goats? I've been really surprised by how much I actually like them.
No well for me, there are a lot of mineshafts here that I think I'd be wise to avoid.. However I've been paying more attention to which trees mean water near the surface - and have a few places at the top of the property that will need more investigation. Fingers crossed!
Best way to learn and master something is by getting ahead of yourself and doing it ;)
My main motivators for goats are they are small and manageable enough and they graze constantly. That means they can eat all the low vegetation around my place and cut down on mosquito habitat near the house.
Next is milk, I would love to try making goat cheese and butter. I also like the meat, so that's an added bonus. Biggest challenge I have right now is providing water for them when I go away for work, which can be up to 2 weeks. Have not found a solution that is not ridiculously expensive yet.
Hope there is no pollution from the mining in the ground. On the plus side, maybe you'll get lucky and find a gold vein they missed ;)
Hey that’s awesome! As you know, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the goats.
I made some chèvre with Feta’s milk, and butter! The butter took forever but was well worth it. Feta has small teats and is difficult to milk, so make sure your milk goats have adequate teats!
They don’t require much water, but any solution that I can think of for you would still freeze. 🤔
They’re very old mines and hopefully pre-date any harsh chemicals being used, but you never know. Haha I’m constantly picking up shiny rocks!

Lol lots of room! We haven’t even fully explored the North side.

Thanks for all the content.
Andy
Hi Andy! I did store 4 IBC totes last year, and they froze solid.
I was surprised that they didn't break, they expanded a lot.
I had a week of sustained below -20 celsius (hitting -30 at times) I didn't stand a chance.
It took over a month of above-freezing temperatures for them to thaw!

Thanks Steve! It's coming along nicely, big upper beams too! 🍻
Great job! You are way ahead of me with the garden, animals, and canning.
I'm hoping to start that next year. I am getting goats soon though.
Will you be drilling a well in the future?
Thanks! In truth I'm getting ahead of myself with the animals and canning too, but I love it.
